Method

This one-to-one service includes both business and personal development, with the goal of assisting the person to reach their potential in all areas of their professional and private lives. Iris uses mentoring, counselling, facilitating and coaching skills to achieve this objective. She shares of her own know-how and experience both on a personal and professional basis in this regard. Having worked as a trainer, coach, facilitator and counsellor in industries for many years, and run her own small (14 people) counselling and seminar agency for 15 years - she knows and understands the business scene. She is continually helping people to develop practical strategies to deal with the pressures involved and with people problems.

Research & Writing for this Service - Back-Up Resources (Tools) to Work With

As a result of identifying and seeking to provide coping strategies for the many problems besetting industry today she wrote three books "How to Lead and Motivate Others", "You Can Do It!" (all about goal setting and motivation) and "You Can Communicate" to help meet this need. These, plus her other books and self-help tapes are used as a back-up resource for her clients between their sessions.

Structure

Flexible time length, or clients can commit to an initial four months work, and extend their time-length in four month blocks as (and if) desired. (For groups the time-frame can be more flexible). Back-up phone contact is available if and when required for her clients. She will see people for an hour to an hour and a half once a week, or an hour and a half to two hours once a fortnight. Early morning and late afternoon appointments are also available.

Style

Her style is interactive, with the emphasis on creating a working partnership. She adopts a pro-active approach, and clients are encouraged to read and put agreed-upon strategies into practise between sessions. Programmes are tailor-made (with the client's co-operation) to meet their individual needs and goals. She is supportive between sessions, and clients are welcome to ring or e-mail her if needed. She shares openly of her knowledge and experience, as is appropriate to reinforce the work in action.

Coaching for Small Groups

Corporate or Private.

Coaching for small groups of 2 to 8 people is a part of her work. Again the emphasis is on interactive and proactive work, with individual attention given to each group member. Time length for this program is usually eight, twelve, sixteen 2-hour sessions, though this is flexible.
As with one-to-one mentoring/coaching, complimentary back-up resource material is supplied.
The program content is structured to meet the needs of the group, though often it is multifaceted. Alternatively it can be on one topic, which is covered in-depth. The following topics are frequently requested:

Venue

Flexible, though Iris has garden-setting premises at Manly (a half hour drive from Auckland City out of peak traffic times). There is a two minute walk across a park to a great beach. The learning process is enhanced in a relaxed setting and usually better results can be achieved by getting people "off-site". Suitable for both one-to-one and up to 8 people. Catering is available if desired.

Fees

Fees vary according to requirements. Contact Iris for further information.

Follow-Up Assessment Procedures

As agreed to by parties involved.

Statement From Coach/Mentor

My vision/mission is to provide a stimulating and supportive learning-base to help the individual to realize their potential in both their professional and personal life. I am interested in dealing with the "whole person" who recognizes that life is one great learning curve, and who is prepared to learn the skills to enhance their life in its entirety. For some people this is to increase their confidence and become better leaders in their field of work. For others it is to learn to cope better with both corporate and personal stress. Still another needs to upskill in the area of communication, so that they can relate more effectively with the people they interact with both at work and home. The passive person may need to learn to be more assertive so that the pathway is cleared for them to forge ahead in both their professional and private life. Then too we may have the manager who is having difficulty in motivating his/her team, and needs some support and training in this area.

I have also had some MD's who, because of their position (it's lonely at the top) needed somebody they could trust and talk openly to. They also needed 'somebody there just for them' in a supportive and interactive role.

In some instances only mentoring is required to achieve the best result, in others, some 'straight' coaching in life-skills. Though often I find that a combination of both is the answer. I have found that people's individual needs vary as much as does the person themselves. Therefore I believe that it is important to ground the life-skills taught in what is reality for the person concerned. Acquiring the skills we lack is a 'rounding-out' and personal growth process. Whether in the workforce or at home, the process must begin within.

"The combination of a person who is open and willing to work, and my experience, skill-base and commitment to helping them achieve results - will prove successful, as we journey together." Iris Barrow
